Cayman: International Day of Persons With Disabilities Commemorated

Today, countries and citizens across the globe unite to celebrate International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPWD). The annual awareness day, observed on 3 December, highlights the strength, resilience, and contributions of individuals with disabilities. It also serves as a reminder of the shared commitment to fostering an inclusive society where everyone, regardless of ability, can thrive.

“A truly inclusive society is one where every individual is valued and has the opportunity to contribute. This sentiment underscores the importance of the National Council for Persons with Disabilities’ (NCPD) mission and the collective responsibility we all share. I am proud to have the Council under my remit and applaud the hard work of the members,” said Premier Honourable Juliana O’Connor Connolly.

Chair of the NCPD, Dr Annette Stephenson, said, “We encourage everyone to reflect on the importance of accessibility and acceptance. It’s essential that we break down barriers—whether physical, social, or attitudinal—that hinder participation and equality. Together, we can create an environment where individuals with disabilities are empowered to achieve their full potential.”

“In honour of this special day, we are excited to also announce the launch of our Mobi Mat campaign, aimed at raising awareness about the importance of accessibility in the Cayman Islands. Mobi Mats provide vital access to our beautiful beaches for individuals with mobility challenges. Keep an eye out for more on official government social channels,” she added.

IDPWD is a significant occasion to promote awareness, advocate for change, and recognise the diverse talents and capabilities of all members of the Cayman Islands community. Disabilities encompass a wide range of physical, mental, and emotional conditions that can affect a person’s daily life. These include both visible disabilities, such as mobility impairments, and invisible disabilities, such as chronic pain or mental health conditions.

The community can support individuals with disabilities by fostering an inclusive environment that respects their needs, advocating for accessibility, promoting awareness and understanding, and providing resources and opportunities that empower them to thrive. The Council invites the public to engage in meaningful conversations, support local initiatives, and participate in events that highlight the importance of inclusion all throughout the year.

The Council has also extended its gratitude to businesses and the community for their ongoing support and commitment to making the Cayman Islands a more accessible and inclusive place for everyone.
