On Saturday, 7 December, the George Town Library came alive with the sounds of conversation, laughter, and storytelling as readers and writers gathered for the Local Authors Expo and Book Sale. The event celebrated the creativity and talent of Cayman’s authors, bringing together over 15 writers to share their stories and engage with the community.

From the moment visitors walked through the historic main entrance on Edward Street, they were met with a vibrant atmosphere. The library’s rich literary history set the stage for a vibrant and engaging experience, where attendees immersed themselves in the diverse stories and voices of the Cayman Islands. Visitors were captivated by the deep insights into Cayman’s heritage, inspired by motivational tales, and drawn into unique narratives through lively discussions and storytelling. The atmosphere buzzed with curiosity and connection as participants explored the creativity and passion behind the books.

First-time author and illustrator Anne-Marie Diaz expressed her excitement about participating: “It’s been a joy to work with the library staff, and I can’t wait to continue to work with the library in the future.”

The Expo was more than just a showcase of books—it was a celebration of connection and creativity. Visitors had the chance to purchase books, enjoy live readings, and have one-on-one conversations with authors. Families appreciated the dedicated children’s area, where little ones coloured and played games while their parents browsed the event. The prize raffle, featuring a curated collection of local books, added an extra touch of excitement to the day.

Expo visitor Brittany Bodden shared her enthusiasm: “It’s a great experience to explore and great for people to come out and support local.”

Reflecting on the event, Acting Director of the Cayman Islands Public Library Services (CIPLS) Kevin Goring expressed the importance of supporting local talent. “The CIPLS was delighted to host the first-ever Local Authors Expo at the George Town Library. It was a wonderful opportunity for the public to meet and greet published authors, swap stories, and take photos—a fantastic way to promote and support our local authors.”

While the season’s Christmas shopping and events may have impacted attendance, the feedback from those present was overwhelmingly positive. “There’s a clear desire for similar events in the future, not only to celebrate local talent but also to enrich our culture, provide activities for families, and promote literacy and lifelong learning,” Goring added.

Inspired by the response, the Library Service is already preparing for the re-launch of the Cayman Islands Book Fair in 2025. The expanded event will feature face painting, storytelling, children’s games, and live book readings—promising an even bigger and more engaging celebration of Cayman’s literary heritage.
