Kids take a bite out of the big apple

A group of primary school students found out why New York City was so good they named it twice.

The Department of Tourism (DOT) sent seven primary school students off to the Big Apple to attend the Fresh Air Fund camp in New York City.

For the few days when they were not at camp, the group stayed at the Marriott Marquis in midtown Manhattan and were escorted by DOT staff, Rhonda Cornwall and Gary Dominguez.

The girls attended Camp Anita Bliss Coler while the boys attended Camp Hayden Marks Memorial.

As well as having fun at their respective camps their trip also included Bronx Zoo, Broadway show Mary Poppins, Governor’s Island and a bit of sight-seeing around Manhattan.

All students and parents attended a meeting at the DOT to share stories and pictures of their trip.

“I liked the swimming, the talent show, the water carnival and the beach party. I made new friends in New York and I had a lot of fun. I would like to go back to New York to visit the city.”

Tiona Miller, 11, North Side Primary

“I like the friends I made, I liked my counsellors especially our leader Tyler. I liked the hotel and the food.”

“I liked everything about the camp, the swimming; you get bands and as you get better the band colour changes. Meeting new people from different places, making new friends and all the activities they had planned for us.”

Destinie Bush, 10, John A. Cumber Primary School

“I’m very happy that she’s happy. I thought she would have been homesick but she said she would do it all over again. Although she didn’t have her friends with her in her cabin, she made new friends. She also wanted to say a special thank you to Aunt Rhonda and Uncle Gary for making her feel like her parents were with her as well as the Department of Tourism for choosing her to participate.”
