Cayman says goodbye to Pat Tibbetts

“Our Beloved Patrick T. Tibbetts” Aug 10, 1952 – Sept. 18, 2012 was on the front cover of the programme that all Pat’s family and friends were given at Elmslie Memorial Church on Thursday (27).

The church on Harbour Drive, George Town was filled with people who knew Patrick and were patrons of his popular Fidel Murphy’s Bar and Restaurant on West Bay Road.

I knew him well. He seemed always lost in thought when he walked past you, his head leaning towards the floor. When he did see you, or you spoke to him, he would stop, his face would light up and you could be engaged in conversation with him for some time. Despite this I always thought of Pat as a “quiet man”.

He was a man I found difficult to love but a man who was easy to become a friend and we were friends. The standing joke we had was in all the many, many years I had known him and frequented his restaurant he had never bought me a drink. I’m glad he didn’t because the joke will always remain, although I am more than a little sad at the reason.

Seldom have I been so shocked when I heard the awful news of his death.

At the Service of Thanksgiving for the life of Patrick T. Tibbetts, his best friend  for many years, Jennifer O’Leary, gave a Tribute and his brother, Mike Tibbetts gave the Remembrance. Pastor John MacMillan conducted the service and Denver Bloomfield played the organ.

The service was simple and Pat wouldn’t have wanted it any other way. The four pieces of music used were well know, “All Things Bright and Beautiful”, “Amazing Grace”, “Open Our Eyes Lord” and “How Marvelous! How Wonderful”.

Goodbye Pat.
