Cayman Brac has become one of the first island in the Caribbean to offer electric vehicles for rent according to John Felder of Cayman Automotive Group.

The service is offered through the Alexander Hotel and was officially launched on Friday 21 September. Attending the launch were Deputy Premier and Minister responsible for the Department of Vehicle & Drivers’ Licensing Hon Juliana O’Connor-Connolly, John Felder of Cayman Automotive Group, owners of the Alexander Hotel Cleveland and Celina Dilbert, Manager Karen Gascoigne, District Commissioner Ernie Scott, Deputy DC Mark Tibbetts, along with hotel guests and Cayman Brac residents.

Available for rent is the two-seat Wheego LiFe, which comes with the standard features of a regular car. These include driver and passengers airbags, anti-lock brakes, power windows and optional air conditioning. The Wheego LiFe can travel about 100 miles on a single charge, is rechargeable from any 100v outlet and tops out at 80 mph on the speedometer.  It takes about eight hours to fully recharge the battery.

Ms. O’Connor-Connolly congratulated the Dilberts and Mr. Felder for having the foresight to offer an electric rent-a-car service.

“We in Cayman Brac know that we have a pristine environment to offer our visitors and we have worked hard to promote eco-tourism,” the Deputy Premier stated.

“Everyone knows we are expanding our airport on the Brac, as part of our plan to attract more tourists. Services such of this will help us to enhance our tourism product,” she added.

Ms. Gascoigne said the Alexander Hotel was delighted to be the first hotel in the Caribbean to offer the Wheelgo electric car to visitors and residents alike.

“This opportunity has boosted our profile in the ecotourism category and will be welcomed by tourists who are keen to see sustainable environmental programmes within their vacation destinations. We encourage our guests to explore the beauty of this island and now we can add this service. No matter  how many miles they do whilst here, the impact on the environment will be negligible, and in the long-term, will help to keep Cayman Brac as a beautiful, clean environment for future generations.”

Mr. Felder was pleased to realise his dream of making electric cars available on Cayman Brac. “ We have worked so hard to bring electric vehicles here. This car is an important part of protecting our beautiful surroundings and I am happy to be a part of that process,” he stated.
