The Ministry and Department of Environment are pleased to announce the recent publication, by the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, of the ‘Flora of the Cayman Islands’ by Dr George R Proctor, former head of the Natural History Division of the Institute of Jamaica.  This full colour version is a total revision of his first edition and describes the 415 native taxa, 29 of them uniquely Caymanian, that can be found on the little over 260 square kilometers that make up the three Cayman Islands.  While still retaining a classic taxonomic approach to describing the Islands’ flora, 250 line illustrations and over 400 spectacular colour photographs illustrate the majority of species most likely to be encountered. Thus, it satisfies the needs of the professional botanist, while providing the non-expert and eco-traveler with an accessible, beautifully presented and informative field guide.

There will be a celebration of the publication of the new Flora on Monday 22^nd October at the National Gallery from 6 to 8 pm. The public are invited to attend. Food & drink service, compliments of Dart Realty (Cayman) Ltd, will be provided by Michael’s Genuine and Ortanique and will include canapés, hors d’oeuvres, soft beverages and a cash bar. Copies of Flora of the Cayman Islands (G R Proctor) and Threatened Plants of the Cayman Islands: The Red List (FJ Burton) will also be available for sale.
