Appleby Assists the Office of the Complaints Commissioner
The Office of the Complaints Commissioner Receives Immigration Training
Appleby (Cayman)’s partner and immigration expert, Nick Joseph, recently assisted the Office of the Complaints Commissioner and her staff to gain a greater understanding of the Immigration Laws of the Cayman Islands. Over a series of three half day sessions, those attending the seminars were provided with an indepth overview of the applicable legislation and, in particular, its genesis as the Caymanian Protection Law.
Emphasis was placed on areas which may be the subject of particular and increased scrutiny with the taking effect of Cayman’s Bill of Rights later this year. Topics included the provisions relating to Caymanians, the rights of persons with permanent residence (of varying types), the position of children, and the gainful occupation of non-Caymanians.
The Complaints Commissioner, Nicola Williams, said: “In keeping with my commitment as
Commissioner to providing top quality, world class training for all my staff, I was delighted to welcome Nick Joseph, Partner at Appleby, to the Office of the Complaints Commissioner to provide an intensive training course on Immigration Law, with particular reference to the Human Rights implications on the rights of children born to non-Caymanian parents. This excellent training, as well as the accompanying comprehensive and detailed materials, was very well received by myself and my staff. I can wholeheartedly endorse this course, which will be of great benefit to the OCC when dealing with matters in this subject area, particularly once the Bill of Rights becomes effective in November 2012.”
