Starting the week of Monday, 19 November, GIS Spotlight repeats the future benefits of marine protection and the safeguards now in place to protect your rights and freedoms.

The underwater world around all three of the Cayman Islands is renowned for its vibrant reefs with multi-faceted corals and sponges teeming with brilliantly coloured fish and other marine life. The challenge is to protect and preserve this environment.

Join us to hear from local fishermen, conservationists and Department of Environment (DoE) officials about the dangers they see to our reefs, prompting the need to further protect and nurture these national treasures.

Learn how man-made and natural trauma impacts fragile marine life. Discover what effect over-fishing, climate change and ocean acidification can have on Cayman’s waters if we don’t act.

Also, see how 25 years of marine parks have helped the Cayman Islands to retain its underwater allure.

Next stop is the National Gallery to celebrate the Cayman Islands new Bill of Rights. Participate in Implementation Day festivities that culminated in the release of Past, Present and Future, a book for school children with donated art work from local artists illustrating individual’s rights, freedoms and responsibilities.
