Life behind bars isn’t easy and serving time is often a struggle of how to spend that time. For some, they focus on their physical well-being, hitting the weights and exercising. Others simply continue to be involved in the same self-destructive behavior on the inside that got them in trouble on the outside. If you happen to be Sheldon M. Brown, though, you use your mind and your time to write novels.

Brown is a 40-something inmate of Northward prison in the Cayman Islands and is, perhaps, that institution’s best known resident. Recently, he has released two novels from his prison cell. Unholy Accord and Mayflower are follow-ups to his debut novel, Caribbean Cartels, which was also written in prison.

His first novel drew heavily on both firsthand knowledge and research into the world of the criminal underground. Brown’s life has largely been a cycle of crime and punishment, sending him in and out of incarceration. A 2006 attempted murder conviction earned him his latest stint behind bars. Claiming to have turned over a new leaf, he has proven to put his time to productive use.

Back to back October releases of the fast paced thrillers Unholy Accord and Mayflower take a turn from the world of organized crime to explore Islamic terrorism and the world of espionage, respectively. Apparently not one to sit on his laurels, yet another Sheldon M. Brown novel is planned for release in 2013. Faced with a twenty-two year sentence, Brown plans to keep using his time to build a legacy as an author.
