Wee Wern’s off to Cayman Islands after one training session
PETALING JAYA: National No. 2 Low Wee Wern has had only one training session since returning injured from the Hong Kong Open last week.
She suffered a hamstring tear in her right leg in the second round loss to eventual finalist Camille Serme of France.
But the 22-year-old Penangite is fairly optimistic that the single training session is enough for her to mount a proper challenge in the Women’s World Open, which starts at the Cayman Islands tomorrow.
“I’ve not done any training since returning from Hong Kong. It was all rehab and Monday was only training session I’ve had on court,” said Wee Wern, who left yesterday.
“It’s not an ideal preparation … I wish I could go under better conditions but I don’t want to miss this opportunity.
“Besides, I only play my first match on Sunday, so I have extra time to recover. The key though would be winning my first match. If I can get through the first round, I’m confident I can be fit enough to push on.
“I spoke with my coach Aaron (Soyza) and we agreed that I’ve been playing well and could have made the final in Hong Kong had it not been for the injury.
“We also felt that it would a real waste not to compete in the world meet given my current form.”
The world No. 7 and seventh seed, however, has a tricky first round tie against world No. 22 Sarah Kippax of England.
Wee Wern has never beaten Kippax in two previous WSA meetings.
World No. 1 Nicol David, who is gunning for her record seventh world title, is the top seed and has been given a fairly straightforward passage into the final.
Her only major obstacle could come in the semi-finals, where she might face fourth seed Alison Waters of England.
Two other Malaysians – Delia Arnold and Siti Munirah Jusoh – will play in the qualifiers.
