The Editor Speaks: Cayman waits … and waits

Colin WilsonwebNothing is quick in the Cayman Islands. It will “soon come”.

Not if it involves the governing United Democratic Party.

And especially if it is a decision that will take guts.

To sack a premier of any country is a tumultuous decision to make and here in a small country it is especially, a difficult one. Especially when that person is the most colourful character in Cayman’s politics ever.

When I read and heard all the rumours circulating from yesterday that the UDP Caucus had finally cracked and they had ousted McKeeva Bush from office I thought “Oh yea”…..

On Sunday 16th on Cayman27’s website the headline was “UDP makes move to remove Premier”.

“Multiple party sources have confirmed to Cayman 27 Premier Hon. McKeeva Bush is in the midst of making preparations to step down as political leader of the United Democratic Party (UDP) and as Premier of the Cayman Islands.”

Another popular website, CNS, said “Although no official announcement has yet been made, it appears that the UDP has finally agreed to replace him with Juliana O’Connor.”

And … “The UDP members are expected to be meeting with the governor this morning…”

They even cautioned, “Nor is it certain that the UDP will continue to stay united in the decision to force the premier out of office.”

With over 100 Bush supporters at the Owen Roberts Airport on Saturday (15) to give him a “Hero’s Welcome” that should have put even more fight in the war horse. The premier is a pugilist of the highest calibre.

I hear he had a party at one of West Bay’s schools (unconfirmed) after his welcome and turkeys were a-plenty.

So we are still waiting and I will not be shocked if we hear nothing today. But if we do, no doubt it will be via the Government TV Station.  Especially as Cayman27 has gone out on a limb and published a story about “multiple sources”. I also have “multiple sources” but when one of them reported I was dead I am not altogether certain of his source. I was even told only on Saturday “they” had heard I had been very ill.

If you wait long enough both those stories will come true.

But waiting for the news of the premier’s resignation….. that might take even longer.
