118 Road crashes since start of RCIPS “Stay Alive” campaign

In the latest Royal Cayman Islands Police Service (RCIPS) news release concerning road safety from 30th November up to December 30th they have reported 28 DUI’s, 100 speeding tickets, 41 using cell phones whilst driving, 87 non set belt wearing, 256 other road offences and 118 road crashes!

Road safety arrests continue to rise
A total of 28 people have been arrested for DUI since the start of this year’s road safety public education campaign – Stay Alive.
In addition, 100 people have been ticketed for speeding, 41 for use of cellphones while driving, 87 for not wearing seatbelts and 256 for a wide variety of other road traffic offences.
The lack of care and attention displayed by drivers while on the roads continues to cause concern with 118 road crashes reported since the start of the campaign on 30 November.
Superintendent Adrian Seales is urging New Year revelers to be responsible. ”We want everyone to have a great time tonight and to bring in 2013 safely,” he said. “If you are going out tonight and you plan to drink, then please make the right decision; either designate a driver or use a taxi/ bus. Let’s work together to make this New Year one to remember – for all the right reasons.”

There has been much publicity concerning the “stay Alive” campaign with many RCIPS releases and also from Government Information Service (GIS) who have heavily promoted the campaign with television programmes both on CITN-Cayman27 and the Government TV station CIGTV.
The “Stay Alive” adverts and banners are everywhere, including on our website, but it seems a lot of drivers are ignoring the message.
