Stop the racket- Rev Gregory
The Right Reverend Dr Howard Gregory, lord bishop of Jamaica and the Cayman Islands, has joined the call for the Government and police to work together at putting an end to the rampant corruption that has been a feature of the transport sector for years.
Gregory, who was yesterday addressing the congregation during the 20th anniversary church service of the National Road Safety Council, pointed to the practice of persons purchasing driver’s licences as one of the issues that demand urgent attention in order to restore order on the nation’s roads.
Similarly, Gregory told the gathering at the St Andrew Parish Church that the technology being utilised by persons in the criminal underworld to create fictitious documents for some motorists must be placed under the microscope.
“As we travel on our roads and get caught up in traffic jams and face the indiscipline of motorists, we sometimes express a longing for the good old days when there were fewer cars on the road,” he said. “People had to go to the examination depot to get an authentic driver’s licence and people demonstrated a greater level of courtesy and consideration for other road users.”
He added: “Unfortunately, like many other things in the life of our nation, we cannot go back to that age, but we can call upon those charged with governance and law enforcement to see that the racket that has gone on around the purchasing of driver’s licences stops.”
Gregory said the police would have to step up the strategy of clamping down on persons who use technology to produce fictitious licences and motor-vehicle insurance certificates.
He added that the rest of society must challenge the dishonest and corrupt culture which says “there is nothing wrong with these practices and offers excuses as to why these things must continue”.
