Dart announces demolition of the former Courtyard Marriott

Jan 19 DART buys -pic(1)Cayman Islands, GRAND CAYMAN. Dart Realty (Cayman), Ltd. announces the demolition of the remaining concrete structure of the former Courtyard Marriott will commence this week.

Local company Jairam Building Contractors is carrying out the demolition of the five-story structure to make way for the new resort under the supervision of construction manager DECCO.

To dismantle the structure, the contractor will use a class of equipment known as Ultra-High Demolition (UHD). In the deconstruction of the building, a 4,300 pound, claw-like mobile demolition processor is attached to the UHD. This machinery penetrates concrete with 150 ton force while blades slice and separate rebar from concrete.

Approximately four weeks of work will commence with the top floors of the property at the southern end, and demolition will proceed in a stair-step system to ensure the stability of the remaining structure as works proceed.

In processing the rubble pile from the demolition, Jairam Building Contractors will be following standards for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification. Reinforcing bar will be removed from the site for recycling. The concrete will be removed and stored to be used as fill in future Dart Realty projects, ensuring that materials are not being sent to the George Town Landfill.

In total, the hotel demolition and redevelopment is projected to generate more than 400 jobs over a 2-3 year build-out period. To date more than CI $1.75 million in contracts on the hotel project have been awarded to local companies.
