Dunbar McFarlane retires from ‘The National’
Dunbar McFarlane, general manager of the National Building Society of Cayman (NBSC), has retired from the position he has served for more than eight years.
He was appointed general manager of the Society in 2004 following the passage of Hurricane Ivan, which battered the Cayman Islands, flooding homes, ripping off roofs and toppling trees as its eye passed just offshore.
NSBC chairman, Earl Jarrett, referring to the hurricane, said McFarlane “saw the opportunity in the crisis, which was to help persons build back their lives with assistance from the NBSC.”
McFarlane guided the organisation through one of the most difficult periods in modern economic history and repositioned the building society to enhance its service in The Cayman Islands, said Jarrett.
Speaking at a farewell function in Grand Cayman recently, Jarrett lauded McFarlane for his service to Cayman’s sole building society, also called The National, following three decades of service to the banking sector in Jamaica and the United Kingdom.
“Dunbar McFarlane guided the NBSC during a period when the chain of islands experienced a one-in-500-year hurricane, followed by the worst global economic crisis in 100 years,” Jarrett said.
“In this setting, he built on the foundation laid by his predecessor, Don Kennedy, growing both loans and savings,” he added.
Although he has retired from active day-to-day duties as general manager, Jarrett said “I am positive that his expertise will always be in demand, given his unique grasp and competent management in the sector over these many years.”
A release from Jamaica National Building Society (JNBS)indicated that McFarlane was integral to discussions which led to the acquisition of the QuikCash assets by Jamaica National Money Services in 2010.
It quoted McFarlane as saying that no staff member resigned during his term and that he encouraged NBSC employees, as well as members, to maintain their loyalty to the organisation.
NBSC is a subsidiary of JNBS.
