Cayman Athletic celebrate season success

Sports accolades and proud smiles were the order of the day when the soccer kids of the Cayman Athletic Sports Club received their awards for the 2010/2011 Season, at the George Town Primary School hall.

Paulette Conolly-Bailey, the club’s Media Officer, began the evening by thanking all those who had helped make the club’s year such a huge success. “A big thank-you to all our sponsors…we are all looking forward to a great upcoming season.”

Jenny Seymour was invited to give the opening prayer:

“Thank you for all those who have helped day after day. Thank you, Lord you have helped us, guided us and blessed us…keep these boys on the right path and bless them,” she said.

Coach Gillie Seymour was also invited to give a few words: “I welcome you and I’m looking forward to higher and better things in the coming years,” he said.

Award categories included: Goalkeeper of the Year, Defender of the Year, Midfielder of the Year, MVP (Most Valuable Player) Goal Scorer, Runner-Up Goal Scorer and Team Spirit. The awards were presented for Under 13’s, Under 15’s, Under 17’s and the First Division.

Angelita Seymour was presented with the Team Manager of the Year Award and Gillie Seymour reveived the Coach of the Year Award. John Nixon received a Fan Supporter of the Year Award.

Sponsor awards were presented to representatives from Central Cooling, Moneygram, Financial Integrated Services, Stuarts Walker Hersant, and George Town Primary School.

Within the five Cayman Sports Club teams there are over 100 boys and there are even plans to start a girls team in the near future.

Coach Ernie Seymour, also known as Coach Gillie, says that to cover the demand to play, there is the need for more coaches.

“We need the older guys to start giving back to the game. If past national players, guys that have been on soccer scholarships or coaching courses have got anything at all from the game then they should be coming back to help,” said Coach Gillie.

All of the Cayman Athletic teams have tasted success in recent years but the U-15 team stands out by being undefeated for the last three seasons in the league and the cup. They have won every single game and Coach Gillie has high hopes for them next season as well.

This year with the help of their sponsors, the U-17 Cayman Athletic side went to Knox College in Jamaica for a cultural education exchange where they were able to compare their skills against other boys the same age.

After all the awards were presented, refreshments were served. And then there was some serious fun, as different prizes were given out for on-the-spot games such as, “The first person to come to the front wearing two-tone socks,” and “first lady to come to the front wearing a pair of men’s shoes.”

Prizes included gift certificates from Funky Tangs, Young World Fashions, Burger King, Popeye’s, Pappagallo, Reflections and Radio Cayman.
