Convicted killer wins appeal and will be deported back to Jamaica

bigstock_legal_law_justice_collage_1614781Collin (Sheldon) Ovid Scott (41), a Jamaican national who was convicted of killing his girlfriend when she told him she was leaving him had his sentence reduced by Cayman’s court of appeal last week.

Scott had pleaded guilty to manslaughter when he murdered 34 year old Maureen Grant in 2007 by stabbing her three times at her home they shared on Erenette Lane in West Bay after she told him she was leaving him for another man.

Grand Court Justice Priya Levers had accepted his guilty plea in January 2008 on the basis of provocation.

Scott had handed himself into police within an hour of stabbing Grant. A doctor said  Scott was suffering from a hysterical stress disorder and the murder was described as spontaneous and almost involuntary.

Scott had announced to relatives he loved Grant so much that if he could not love her, no one else would and therefore he was not above killing her.

Scott had no previous criminal convictions and no previous record of violence but Justice Levy sentenced him to 13 years imprisonment after saying the case for provocation was extremely borderline.

With no objection from the Crown, Scott’s attorney’s application to reduce his 13 year sentence to nine years was granted.

Because Scott has already served six years his release from HMP Northward should be quick as will be is deportation back to Jamaica.
