Steel pan bandCamana Bay, Grand Cayman (Wednesday 24 April 2013): From a musical journey through the world of Soca in honour of Cayman Carnival Batabano’s 30th Anniversary and live music events on The Crescent to fairs, workshops and shows for local art lovers and interactive cooking classes for both kids and adults – there’s always something happening at Camana Bay!

Super Side Dishes Cooking Class

Feeling lost or uninspired in the kitchen? Join Bon Vivant and Chef Maureen Cubbon for a host of interactive cooking classes that focus on quick, healthy and delicious dinners that everyone can enjoy. Sample healthy and fresh local produce, like Kale, Callaloo, Pumpkin and other Farmers’ Market treats, and leave with a handful of new, inspiring side dish recipes that are easy to recreate at home. Pantastic Steel Pan Performance

 

Don your dancing shoes and get ready to move! Bringing the rhythms of the Caribbean to Camana Bay’s Town Centre on select Friday evenings throughout May is “Pantastic”, a talented local youth steel pan band. The group is raising funds to travel to Toronto this summer to join UCCI and Toronto’s “AfroPan” steel pan bands at the Caribana 2013 Festival and Parade. Enjoy a drink or an ice cream, sit back and relax as you listen to the chilled out sounds of steel pan under the cool shade of The Crescent.

Cayman Carnival Batabano’s Friday Fete-for-a-Cause

Batabano-Parade-08-054This year Cayman Carnival Batabano celebrates 30 years of existence. In honour of this impressive milestone, a who’s who of Caribbean entertainment is set to descend on the Cayman Islands for Cayman Carnival Batabano 2013. On Friday 3 May, take part in a nostalgic musical journey through the history of Batabano, as vintage Kaiso meets high energy Soca at Cayman Carnival’s Friday Fete-for-a-Cause. Open to all ages, cultures and carnival lovers, dance through the ages, from old-time favourites to today’s biggest Soca hits, with legendry Caribbean entertainers Baron (Trinidad), Mighty Gabby (Barbados) and Red Plastic Bag (Barbados). Also performing are The Dragonaires (Jamaica), plus a special appearance from 4 Divas of Soca. Gates open at 6pm and tickets cost CI$40 for General Admission or CI$75 for VIP Admission. Part proceeds will support the Cayman Islands Kidney Foundation’s efforts to purchase of a new dialysis machine

First Friday: Live on The Paseo

Celebrate the weekend with a festive free concert featuring local artists, musicians and organisations. Local band Trinity will open the show, followed by Intransit, who will showcase their signature blend of contemporary Caribbean Jazz and Fusion. Visual Arts Society artists will be on hand to share and discuss their work and, in honour of World Hunger Day, Feed Our Future and Meals on Wheels will join the festivities to share information on their efforts to eliminate hunger in the Cayman Islands. According to Feed Our Future, more than 15% of the enrolled Government school population receives financial assistance to buy school lunches. And many of Cayman’s teachers are still purchasing food for students not getting enough to eat at home. Come learn more about how you can help, have fun and show your support for a worthy cause! Cayman Islands Nurses Association 5K Run/Walk

The Cayman Islands Nurses Association will hold its annual 5K run/walk to raise funds for the Lighthouse School, as well as support the educational betterment of the nursing profession in Cayman. The race will begin and end at Camana Bay. Pre-registration can be made online at  caymanactive.com or on the day from

10th Annual Chalkfest Competition

Budding artists are invited to leave their easels at home and use the streets of Camana Bay as their canvas at the 10th Annual Chalkfest Competition. On Saturday 11 May, the Town Centre will turn into a larger-than- life art exhibit as participants vie to become chalk champion, creating works of street-art along Market Street. Held in collaboration with The National Gallery of the Cayman Islands, Chalkfest is based on the ancient art of street painting. The competition is open to artists of all ages and abilities; pre-registration is now open and can be made up until 2pm on event day. There will be prizes awarded for the best work. Entry categories are: Primary (5-10 years old), Middle School (11-13 years old), High School (14-17 years old) and Adults (18+). Registration fee is CI$5 for kids and CI$10 for adults, and proceeds will benefit The National Gallery Outreach Programme. Chalk will be provided free of charge and participants are encouraged to bring rags, sponges and buckets to help with blending and covering large areas. Free water and sunscreen will be available for all participants.

Jackson Galaxy Book Signing & Presentation

Join Jackson Galaxy, star of Animal Planet’s My Cat from Hell, for the paperback release of his memoir, Cat Daddy: What the World’s Most Incorrigible Cat Taught Me About Life, Love and Coming Clean. Galaxy was a down-and-out rock musician with a part-time job at an animal shelter and multiple addictions when a physically and emotionally wounded cat named Benny came into his life. Visual Arts Society Art Show

More than 30 years ago, a small group of artists got together to paint and share ideas in a small building in South Sound. Today, the Visual Arts Society (VAS) and its members, including professional artists, hobbyists and members of the community who simply have a passion for art, is a pioneering non-profit organisation for the appreciation, enhancement and learning of art in the Cayman Islands. Drum Circle

Professional drummers Randy Chollette, Damion Thaxter and Eden Hurlston of the musical group I AM PERCUSSION ENSEMBLE bring the Town Centre to life with a jam session featuring African, Cuban and Caymanian rhythms. The group was formed to promote brotherhood, unity and cultural development through the integration of music. Members of the public are invited to join in with their own instruments and will be given pointers throughout the session. So bring your instrument if you’d like to jam, bring your voice if you want to sing, or simply listen and enjoy an evening of rhythm and beats!

Cayman Heart Fund Discovery Day 5K Walk/Run

The Cayman Heart Fund will hold its annual Discovery Day Run/Walk at Camana Bay! This year, Cayman Heart Fund is raising funds for eleven AED units for the public schools in Grand Cayman and Cayman Brac, as well as the University College of the Cayman Islands (UCCI). The race will start at 7am on Market Street and participants will run or walk twice around the Town Centre of Camana Bay. Registration is CI$10 for adults and CI$5 for children 16 and under and can be made online at caymanactive.com, at the pre- registration booth underneath The Observation Tower on Friday 17 May 5:30-9pm or Saturday 18 May

10am-4pm, or at the Information Commissioners Office in Elizabethan Square the week before the race.

Co-owner/Chef Cindy Hutson, co-owner Delius Shirley and Executive Chef Sara Mair invite you for a Full Moon “Caja China” Pig Roast under the stars.
