Lyndon Leathan Martin (42), was found guilty of stealing $926 from the Parent Teachers Association (PTA) of the Creek and Spot Bay Primary School at a fundraising food sale in 2011.

In Summary Court on Cayman Brac, Martin was found to have collected the cash from the food sale but failed to hand it over to the PTA.

On Friday 26 April, the day following his trial, Justice Nova Hall handed out a sentence of $750 or two months in jail for the charge of theft.

Martin, however, was found not guilty of deception, relating to charges that he fraudulently cashed PTA cheques amounting to $700.

In 2008, Martin was found guilty of obtaining property by deception. This conviction stopped him running in the May 2013 election after he had allowed himself to be nominated to stand in the electoral district of Cayman Brac and Little Cayman.

He was elected to represent Cayman Brac and Little Cayman in the Legislative Assembly from 2000-2005 along with Juliana O’Connor Connolly and is a founding member of the United Democratic Party (UDP).

He lost his seat to Moses Kirkconnell in 2005.

Martin is also one of the ex-employees of Cayman Net News who, with fellow journalist, John Evans, started the Tempura scandal when they attempted to find material from their boss, Desmond Seales, which would identify a senior RCIPS officer for leaking sensitive police information to the newspaper.
