Progressives and UDP reply to C4C Statement
We welcome the statement issued by the C4C candidates this morning in which they have at long last renounced the UDP and have said that if any of them are elected they will not seek to form a government with Mr. McKeeva Bush and the UDP. We have been calling on the C4C candidates all through this campaign to tell voters who they would be prepared to work with to form the next government. Better late than never.
In other respects, though, the C4C’s statement appears to reflect a certain level of desperation as they seem to have finally faced the stark reality of failure on Election Day. Failure of a campaign that was misconceived and without substance, which has offered voters little except anti-party rhetoric. We are a mere week away from the General Elections. Yet the country is still wondering what the C4C stands for and what is their position on the challenges the country faces. It is unimaginable that a group of candidates who claim to be the answer to Cayman’s myriad of problems has been unable to put together a plan which they are prepared to commit to and be held accountable for. How can any group of candidates which wishes to be taken seriously not produce a manifesto? If they are unable to agree on a plan for the country before the elections, what chance is there of them agreeing on one if they are elected?
The Progressives is fielding a slate of 15 candidates. We are optimistic that we will win enough seats to form the next government. If we do not, we will work with other elected members who share the views and philosophy to which we subscribe. These are the principles of honesty, integrity in office, transparency, accountability and compassion for our people.

The UDP works for all the people of the Cayman Islands, not just the privileged few. Nations with two party or multi-party systems include the United States, UK, Canada, Brazil, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, India, Ireland, Israel, Italy, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Sweden, and most of the developed countries of the world. What is C4C? Is it a party? Or a group operating in the shadows, under the control of the privileged few?
The UDP believes in true democracy. You know who our candidates are; you know who governs and manages our party. We are transparent and open. C4C wants to take Cayman back to the dark ages, to feudalism – where a few families ruled and the rights and aspirations of decent hard working people were abused. The people were controlled by the rich and power. This is not the time to go backwards in time. We cannot afford to hand Cayman over to the inexperienced who now want to play with the future of our Islands. Where is the C4C manifesto? What do they stand for? What are their policies? It’s simple – they don’t have any. There is no substance, just hot air and hollow slogans.
The UDP is the party of action, of proven results. The people know what we stand for and it’s set out in our Manifesto. We are inclusive and work for all the people. We don’t have time for divisive politics – we focus on what matters, on our people and on their future. We will continue to watch as the other parties and “groups” make adolescent comments about our candidates and about our party, because the people of our Islands know better. These attacks simply demonstrate desperation and inexperience and we will continue to rise above it and focus on the real issues – jobs and investment, education and training, our heritage and values. When elected, the people know the UDP will deliver real opportunities for all Caymanians, we will deliver on our clear and transparent policies set out in our Manifesto, and will improve the standard of living of all our people.
We will continue to watch our opponents squabble in the playground of politics, trying to get to grips with the issues that really affect our people. The truth is they are disconnected from our people. The UDP knows that McKeeva Bush has the policies to lead this country. There is no fight in the UDP about leadership – we only fight to protect our country from those parties and shadowy groups that want to drag us back to the dark ages. Cayman is not a playground for the rich and inexperienced to experiment with politics, to play with the lives of our people. We simply cannot allow this to happen.
We are above the silliness that strikes at the heart of our opponents. The UDP is the party of strength and vision, of cohesion and unity. The UDP will continue to focus on what really matters and our unwavering commitment to improve the lives of all Caymanians is our pledge, our promise and our mission.
