Unexpected Tales: Elke Feuer’s Island Life

By Serena Clarke

The Cayman Islands is one of those places I’d heard of, but probably couldn’t pin down on a map. So when I was getting ready for a blog visit from author Elke Feuer, I did a bit of googling.

Grand Cayman What a stunning place! Lucky Elke lives in beautiful Grand Cayman in the Caribbean, with her husband and two kids. Reading, spending time with her family, traveling, and meeting people is her joy – and writing is her passion. Jazz and salsa are her favorite music to write to. She says she stumbled into writing suspense, and to her surprise found she enjoyed it, along with writing about serial killers. Elke is fascinated by them and what motivates them to kill. She writes time travel, historical, and contemporary novels to even out her dark side.

You’re an intriguing combination Elke! Tell us about the excitement of getting that first ‘Yes’.

I was on maternity leave when I got the ‘yes’ email from Crimson Romance. My baby girl was sleeping and my in-laws were visiting, so unfortunately screaming wasn’t an option, but I did jump up and down a lot in our office and again after I told my husband and in-laws. Getting published was a dream from childhood, so it was wonderful to have it come true after so many years of rejection letters.

An amazing feeling! What had inspired you to start writing seriously – and keep at it until you finished a book?

The start would have to be my very first online course, ‘Time to Write’ with Kelly L. Stone. I wrote sporadically through the years, but never consistently. I took her class to get tips on how to better schedule my time, and learned one important thing. If something is important, you make time for it. That one saying was rocket fuel for accomplishing my writing goals to get me where I am today.

The other important thing was fellow authors: their success, challenges, support, laughter, and love.

What can’t you write without?

Music. My mind runs a mile a minute, which makes it difficult to concentrate when writing. The music is a great magnet for unwanted thoughts so I can concentrate on writing.

As a writer who’s also a reader, what do you look for in a book?

I like stories that aren’t cookie cutters and have strong characters that know what they want right out of the gate.

Beefy or geeky – what’s your favourite kind of hero?

Oh, I’m gonna have to go with beefy. I like a smart man, but I gotta have the rippling muscles to go with the smart. Much more fun!

The best of both worlds! What’s something that not a lot of people know about you, but you wish more people COULD know?

Oh boy. That I’m a published author. LOL!

Now you’ve achieved that dream, what’s next?

I’m currently working on two stories. A contemporary romance, The Trouble with Soul Mates, and a thriller/suspense, Deadly Bloodlines, which is book one of a new series I’m writing based in the Cayman Islands where I live. After that? World domination? Okay, maybe not the world, but a little piece would be nice. *big grin*

We’ll be keeping an eye on you Elke! 🙂 Thanks so much for being a guest on my blog. Good luck with For the Love of Jazz and the next stories!

Thanks for having me, Serena! I really enjoyed answering the questions and sharing a little about myself.
