Meakins goes down fighting
FORMER Caribbean champion Karen Meakins went down in three tough sets in the semi-finals of the inaugural BCQS Masters Squash Tournament on last Friday (19) at the Queen’s Park Cricket Club (QPCC) Squash Club, Queen’s Park Oval, St Clair.
The Briton, who has been residing and representing Barbados for over decade and is the second-ranked female player in the Caribbean, was beaten in three close sets 11-10, 11-10, 11-7 by former national champion Paul Jerome De Verteuil.
James Bentick booked the other place in last night’s over-35 title match when the OECS (Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States) champ whipped Barbadian Don Benn 11-6, 11-5, 11-7.
John Holley, a former national and multiple veterans’ (over-40) champ cruised past Trinidad and Tobago Squash Association president Raymond Patrick 11-4, 11-9, 11-5 in the over-55 semi-finals.
Leon Truss became the third Barbadian to lose in a semi-final when he was beaten 11-8, 11-2, 11-2 by former ten-time national champ Richard Hart for the other place in the title match.
However a Barbadian finally got into a final when Mark Sealy defeated Brian Jackson 11-5, 11-5, 11-10 in the over-45 division, Roger Salandy cruised past William Bhola 11-6, 11-8, 11-3 in the other semi-final.
The five-day tournament concluded after press time July 20th.
