Youngsters Weir and James claim 200 and 400m honours

Caribbean athletics is in rude health as two stars confirmed their immense talent at the London Anniversary Games at the Olympic Stadium on July 26.

Jamaican Warren Weir and Kirani James from Grenada won the 200m and 400m respectively to confirm their ability and the gold medals that they won at the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Weir – who was part of Jamaica’s stunning 123 in the 200m at the Olympics – took the long sprint and said immediately afterwards: “ I am pretty pleased with 19.89, it’s a very fast time going to Russia. It was exactly what I wanted to do.

“ It’s one race one win. It is a great stadium and the crowd are amazing. I am confident going into the World Championships that I can run my race and win.”

Compatriot Jason Young followed Weir home with a time of 19.99 seconds to keep Jamaica’s conveyor belt of talent moving in the right direction.

King James was once again at his devastating best. The 20-year-old saw off the USA’s Tony McQuay to record a time of 44.65 seconds.

A modest James said: “It was a great run. A very competitive race. I’m just happy to come back to London with all the greats.

“They were sneaking up on me a little bit on the home straight but I just tried to stay relaxed and just finish strong. It brought back a lot of fond memories and just being here is great.

“I’m most definitely confident in my abilities and what I can do ahead of Moscow. The other guys are great as well so I have to keep them in check and make sure I don’t get too relaxed.
