Soca artists Garlin and Lyons are ‘no-shows’
Hundreds of fans who attended the “Ignite” concert last Friday (16) to see the headline act went away bitterly disappointed.
Trinidadian soca artists Bunji Garlin and Fay-Ann Lyons were ‘no shows’ claiming the airline tickets bringing them to Grand Cayman had not been purchased.
Garlin said “Better organisation could’ve prevented this.”
CPA board changed
According to the Cayman Islands Gazette published 6th August the Cayman Islands Government have made eight changes to the Central Planning Authority (CPA). This is the board responsible for development in Grand Cayman.
The eight new members are: Robert Selkirk Watler, Jr. (deputy chairman), S.T. Bodden, Dalkieth Bothwell, Joseph Coe, Trent McCoy, Selvin Richardson, Sharon Roulstone and Fred Whittaker.
The members that keep their place are: A.L. Thompson Jr. (Chairman), Ray Hydes, Rexford Miller, Eldon Rankin and Edgar Ashton Bodden. Mr. Bodden will represent the Development Control Board (responsible for the Sister Islands of Cayman Brac and Little Cayman).
The previous board members not re-appointed are: Peterkin Berry, Peter R. Campbell, Dave A. Christian, Gillard McLaughlin, Steve McLaughlin, Alan Myles, Helbert Rodriquez and Antonio Smith.
Cayman Airways cancels all year round flights to Dallas
The Cayman Airways twice weekly flights to and from Dallas Ft. Worth, Tx. will end on August 31st 2013. However, there will be seven additional flights on 9, 16, 23 and 30 November; 21 and 28 December, 2013; and 4 January, 2014. After that the route will revert to a summer only schedule.
Tourists who have already booked flights will be offered ticket refunds or different route options through gateway cities on the East Coast.
Cayman Airways gave the reason for the cancellations as lack of demand saying the Dallas market “is very seasonal”.
The twice-weekly summer 2014 schedule for Dallas will relaunch on 24 May, 2014 and run through 31 August 2014, operating on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
Kirk Freeport robbery trial dismissed
Aaron Bernardo (28) who was charged with taking part in the hold up and robbery of 44 Rolex and Brietling watches from Kirk Freeport in The Strand earlier this year has been thrown out of court.
The no case to answer submission by Bernado’s lawyer was upheld.
The trial was due to commence in September.
No one else has been charged with the crime and Bernado has spent approx. three months in Northward prison.
Nalty and Pascal to represent Cayman in Columbia
Ashleigh Nalty and Alexander Pascal will represent the Cayman Islands at the 17th Pan Am Junior Championships to be held in Medellin, Colombia from Friday 23 to Sunday 25 August.
The announcement was made by the Cayman Islands Athletic Association (CIAA).
Nalty will be competing in the women’s high jump and Pascal will be competing in the men’s javelin throw.
Carl Brown returns to Cayman as a ‘spy’
Carl Brown who was technical director of Cayman Islands football from 2007 until 2011 is back in the Cayman Islands. He is here to assess the inaugural CONCACAF Under-15 Championship as part of the Technical Study Group.
He said he was very encouraged by what he has seen, the way the Cayman youth have been playing in the Championship.
“This can only auger well for the development of football in the region,” Brown told CITN/Cayman27.
National Conservation Law ‘soon come’
Cayman Islands Minister of Environment, Hon. Wayne Panton, has announced there will be a National Conservation Law by the end of this year.
“If we are going to be committed and serious about protecting our environment making sure our tourism and quality of life is protected, we have to do these things,” he said and added it was time to put down the political football and put measures in place to protect the environment.
