Carifesta brings together Caribbean diversity in Suriname
Paramaribo. With its stands exhibiting the cultural diversity of Latin American and Caribbean countries, the Great Market of Arts in Suriname hosts the eleventh year of the Carifesta.
Handicrafts of indigenous peoples of the region, paintings from different sources from abstraction to figuration, and infectious Caribbean music occupy all areas of this important market in the capital
The culinary pavilion, demonstrations by the monks of China’s Shaolin Temple, the choreography of Cuban Tropicana cabaret, and performances of Surinamese jazz players Jana Denise and Haitian rapper Wyclef Jean stand out among program.
The Carifesta, which takes place from 16 to 25 this month, is attended by delegations from 30 countries from the region and elsewhere, including the Cuban delegation with a wide representation
More than 2,000 people came to the capital to share the Caribbean creativity and contribute to the integration of their peoples, said President of Suriname, Desi Bouterse.
According to CARICOM secretary general, Irwin LaRocque, developing culture and entertainment industry can contribute to prosperity in the region.
