Commissioner aids capture of fleeing thief
The Commissioner was driving his car along Fort Street when he saw a man being chased by a security guard. Baines stopped his car and detained the suspect, who was later arrested for shoplifting.
A spokesperson from the security firm said their employee, Om Thapa, was alerted by staff at La Parfumerie II that a man just grabbed some goods from the store and fled. The guard chased after the thief with his dog.
Also in the chase was Thapa’s colleague, Leonardo Solomon. The suspected thief ran behind Burger King, through the grounds of Elmslie United Memorial Church, along Harbour Drive and then caught at the intersection of North Church Street and Fort Street because of a stopped vehicle.
The vehicle that had stopped at the traffic lights was driven by Royal Cayman Islands Police Service Commissioner, David Baines!
