16 Cayman cricketers called up for International tournament
Greenies, the Cayman Islands 2013 League Champions, have eight of their players called up to train for the International Cricket Council World League Division 5 tournament.
Also being called up are eight players from By Rite who were runners-up to Greenies.
The cricket tournament will be held in Malaysia in February and March, the date is yet to be confirmed.
Other countries involved are Malaysia, Tanzania, Guernsey, Jersey and Nigeria. Training began under senior team coach Pearson Best, who is assisted by Franklin Hinds.
The squad is a mix of experience and youth providing the coaching staff with various options as they seek to step up to Division 4 and nearer the goals set in the association’s strategic plan.
Senior players Steve Gordon, Ainsley Hall, Ryan Bovell, Kevin Bazil, Abali Hoilett and Ronald Ebanks join youngsters such as the Cato brothers Darren and Corey, Zachary McLaughlin, Ramon Sealy, Vincent Ebanks, Omar Willis, Patrick McConvey and Gregory Ebanks.
The squad trains at the Smith Road Oval on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.
Cayman Islands’ national team first entered regional tournaments in 2000 as an Affiliate country competing against the Associates: Argentina, Bermuda, Canada and USA. Some of the outstanding achievements in the country’s brief history are participating in the West Indies regional one-day tournament in 2000 against Guyana, Leeward Islands, Windward Islands and Bermuda; achieving first place in the ICC Americas Affiliate tournament held in Jamaica in 2001 involving Bahamas, Suriname and Turks and Caicos and coming in fifth place winning the Plate tournament in the World Cup Qualifying Tournament Division 5 in Malaysia 2005.
The ICC World Cricket League is a series of international one-day cricket tournaments for national teams without Test status, administered by the International Cricket Council. All associate and affiliate members of the ICC are eligible to compete in the league system, which features a promotion and relegation structure between divisions. The league system has two main aims: to provide a qualification system for the World Cup that can be accessed by all associate and affiliate members, and as an opportunity for these sides to play international one-day matches against teams of similar standards.
