Even if you’re not great with ghost stories and costumes aren’t your cup of tea, you still may be able to scare a friend into spitting out his or her pumpkin spice latte this Halloween.

Ghost Cam+ is a mobile app that lets you customize one of the Internet’s oldest gags — the screaming ghost. Start by applying the app’s spooky filters and fonts to one of your pictures. Then, set the timer and hand the phone off to a friend, pretending to show the person your creation. When the timer elapses, a shrieking spirit will appear.

Of course, you might not want to risk having that person drop your expensive smartphone during his or her moment of horror. If that’s the case, you’ll have to decide if the app’s photo editing features merit its $0.99 price tag.

Aside from the filters and fonts, you can use the app to adjust the brightness and contrast in a way that’ll make the subject of your photo look like a ghost.
