After 14 years of tireless commitment, National Gallery employee Anne Goulden has decided to retire. I’m sure you all agree that she will be irreplaceable. Fortunately she has promised to come back as a volunteer for NGCI events so she will not be too far away. All the best Anne, and happy retirement!

In other news, the National Gallery is planning a significant public art competition supported by Water Authority – Cayman. We’re inviting all artists who are eligible to enter proposals for a public sculpture or installation for the entrance roundabout of NGCI’s new building located on the Esterly Tibbetts Highway. The competition rules and regulations will be posted to the NGCI website next week Monday. We are very excited about this competition and are looking forward to viewing the submissions.

The National Gallery of the Cayman Islands is pleased to announce an upcoming public art competition supported by the Water Authority – Cayman to celebrate their 30th anniversary. All eligible artists are invited to enter proposals for a public sculpture or installation at the entrance roundabout of the NGCI’s new building located on the Esterly Tibbetts Highway. The winning project will receive complete financial assistance for the execution of the final work as well as a CI $10,000 cash prize. All proposals can be submitted to the National Gallery between Monday, 27 January 2014, 9:00 AM Eastern Standard Time (EST) and Friday, 31 January 2014, 5:00 PM (EST).

The complete list of rules and regulations will be available to the public from Monday, 25 November 2013 on the NGCI website. Artists will be asked to carefully consider location, theme, production, and implementation. A panel of professional judges will be looking for long-term durability as the final work will become a permanent feature at NGCI and part of the permanent collection for future visitors to enjoy.

Happy Retirement Anne Goulden!

After her 14 years of playing a central role at NGCI, Anne has decided to retire. Anne joined the National Gallery back in 1999 and her memories and anecdotes of these early days have gone down in NGCI history. She is a wealth of knowledge about NGCI and has played many different roles over the years first as Office Administrator, later as Deputy Director (Ops & Finance), Operations Manager, and more recently focusing on our library and collection. Anne has also played a hundred other volunteer roles from bartender to art instructor, artist, and van driver. The list goes on….

Please join us in thanking Anne for her unwavering loyalty over the past 14 years. The organisation has grown from strength to strength, in no small part as a result of her constant efforts and commitment. And let’s not forget Anne’s husband Peter, whom we thank for his tireless volunteering in numerous different ways as well! Anne, it has been a true pleasure working alongside you and we wish you the very best for the plans you have ahead of you!

Our Story of Art | A Survey of Cayman Islands Art History

The National Gallery’s new exhibition Our Story of Art features 50 years of Cayman Islands’ art history through the work of over 50 artists.

The exhibition traces the journey local artists have taken over the past five decades. Starting in the late 1960s, which was a period dominated by picturesque realism, the exhibition follows the development of the fledging art scene through the 1980s, moving on to the emergence of a home-grown Caymanian aesthetic in the mid-1990s, before culminating in the more socially-conscious visual narrative of the present day.

The diverse selection of works on display provide an insight into the history and creative vision of a people realised through a wide variety of media and disciplines – painting, works on paper, collage & mixed media assemblage, ceramics, sculpture, thatch craft, textiles, and photography. Many of Cayman’s best known artists are represented including Bendel Hydes, Gladwyn ‘Miss Lassie’ Bush, and the Native Sons, along with lesser known artists that were instrumental in establishing the early visual arts scene. Works have been loaned from private and public collections.

The National Gallery’s Our Story of Art exhibition is supported by Susan A. Olde, OBE. It opens on Friday 15 November and runs until 13 February 2014. For a complete list of exhibiting artists and related education programmes visit www.nationalgallery.org.ky or email [email protected].

Established in 1996, the National Gallery of the Cayman Islands (NGCI) is a vibrant arts organisation that seeks to fulfil its mission through exhibitions, artist residencies, education/outreach programmes, and research projects.

NGCI operates in both a local and global arena. As part of our mission to “promote and encourage the appreciation and practice of the visual arts, of and in the Cayman Islands” we send Caymanian art and artists abroad as well as having many fine international artists visit, exhibit, and work in the Cayman Islands.

Public Art

Sculpture of the week…

John Raymond Henry is an internationally renowned sculptor who has has created some of the largest contemporary metal sculpture (90 to 100 feet high) in the United States, and his sculpture is designed, engineered, fabricated, and erected by his own studio in Tennessee.

Henry’s sculptures resemble huge welded steel drawings. He arranges linear and rectilinear elements that appear to defy gravity and float, suggesting a moment of arrested motion where flying or tumbling elements are frozen. There is a simple elegance and an unexpected sense of immediacy and lightness in his work.

Cayman Watercolour Calendar 2014

The Gift Shop is located in the National Gallery’s lower exhibition hall. Proceeds from the Gallery Gift Shop help to fund our exhibitions and education programmes.

School Tours

Schools can now book a tour for the new exhibition Our Story of Art. NGCI Active Learning Sessions are also available. These sessions explore the National Collection of art and covers different areas of the National Curriculum.

Both of these programmes are FREE for local schools, but must be booked in advance.
