Honduras tops Cayman for first-ever CWU20 win

GEORGE TOWN, Cayman Islands – Linda Moncada scored two second-half goals to propel Honduras past the Cayman Islands 3-0 in the 2014 CONCACAF Women’s Under-20 Championship on Tuesday at the Truman Bodden Sports Complex.

The win was the Central Americans’ first-ever in the competition and enabled them to finish third in Group B following setbacks to first-place Mexico and runner-up Trinidad & Tobago. The host Cayman Islands went winless in three matches without any points.

Linda Moncada, Honduras’ top scorer in Central American qualifying with three goals, netted the first tally three minutes into the second half. Midfielder Rebecca Breve, who was an influential presence throughout the evening, superbly chipped a pass over the midfield line and the Cayman defense, releasing Moncada for a sprint into the right side of the Cayman box. As goalkeeper Kristina Seymour tried to cut down the angle, the Olimpia forward placed the ball into the far-side netting.

Nine minutes later, Cayman’s Neesah Godet bounced a left-footed effort from 28-yards that goalkeeper Kelin Palma gathered in without difficulty.

After some commotion at the top of the home side’s box in the 81st minute, Honduras’ Yeimy Estrada emerged with the ball and squared a deflected pass to Moncada. The 18-year-old, without hesitation, ripped a shot past Seymour to make it 2-0.

A bit of misfortune on Cayman’s part gave Honduras one last goal five minutes into second-half stoppage time. Seymour could not come up with the ball that was poked into the box. Johana Lopez was there, however, to knock it home.

The tournament will resume on Friday with a semifinal doubleheader. Mexico will meet Costa Rica in the opener, followed by an encounter between the United States and Trinidad. The eventual finalists, along with the winner of the match for third place, will earn tickets to the 2014 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Canada.
