From Cayman Islands National Gallery

The National Gallery is hosting a brand new painting workshop titled “Seascapes, Cayman Style With Christel Ibsen”. The painting course takes place over a weekend – Saturday, 16 and Sunday, 17 March from 10:00 AM to 3:30 PM each day.

The workshop is suitable for all levels (including beginners) and is perfect for anyone wanting to be more creative in the new year. At the workshop Christel will teach you the techniques she uses to create multi-layered, textured paintings using mixed media, acrylic and oil. The workshop will explore how the spectrum of light and contrasting hues are the most important factors to consider when attempting to capture the glorious colour and texture of the Caribbean waters and the Cayman beaches. Students will create a seascape by exploring reflection and the effect of light flickering on the water, creating life on a blank canvas.

Fees: $180 for non-members, $162 for members (about $15 per hour)

Christel Ibsen’s style developed from studying fresco painting at New York’s National Academy. Her training in fresco and design techniques has influenced the way she uses different media and techniques in her work to achieve minute details as well as diverse and accentuated textures. Having previously worked filming fashion shows for designers such as Christian Dior and Karl Lagerfeld, and producing documentary films, Christel’s paintings have evolved from decades of working in the creative fields of photography and filmmaking.

Christel Ibsen’s work is represented and sold in Canada, Grand Cayman, Denmark, Dubai, England, France, Germany, Holland, Italy, Japan, Portugal, Spain and the United States.

Judy Mir creates seascapes and landscapes that reflect her fascination with moving waters and studied reflections. Following a career in advertising and photojournalism, Judy has studied oil painting at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and with master impressionist painter Lois Griffel.
