Boxer’s grand plan to become Sport Minister

Charles “Killa” Whittaker is preparing the biggest fight of his life – but this bout won’t be taking place in the boxing ring.

The world number two says once he hangs up his gloves for good he wants to become a politician and Member of the Legislative Assembly.

And he’s set his sights on taking charge of the Ministry of Sport – and using his vast boxing experience to promote Cayman to the world.

“It’s just another part of the plan,” said the 37-year-old, who is due to fight for the World Title next year. “Maybe not Premier, but certainly Minister of Sport.”

Outspoken Whittaker has often voiced his support for McKeeva Bush and says if it weren’t for the premier, he wouldn’t have gotten the shot at the title.

But now West Bayer Whittaker has revealed his political ambitions and says he would pull no punches if he got into government.

“I would love to be Minister of Sport,” he said. “I think the one thing this country is lacking is it needs a Minister of Sport to be involved in sport.

“Nobody truly understands the importance of sport. It is obvious that sport is the biggest business in the world, the biggest activity in the world and the biggest pastime.

“Very few politicians walk through the airport and have people running up to them, but if that was Mike Tyson or Pele.

“It is very important that we develop sports in this country because we have so much talent that’s waiting to be discovered.”

“People may say that I’m too politically minded, but I believe as a man we all have a right to stand up for something.

“We have practiced the method of hush, don’t say nothing, don’t rock the boat, but you can’t bring about change and say I don’t want to offend anybody.”
