GRAND CAYMAN, Cayman Islands (November 25, 2024) – The debate over the proposed cruise pier in the Cayman Islands took center stage on Radio Cayman’s Talk Today last week, prompting the Association for Cruise Tourism (ACT) in the Cayman Islands to address what it described as “misinformation” shared during the program. The discussion, hosted by Ray Singh, featured representatives from Sustainable Cayman and Amplify Cayman who voiced concerns about the pier’s environmental impact and questioned the economic viability of cruise tourism.

ACT Executive Program Manager Ellio Solomon called into the program to set the record straight, emphasizing the critical role cruise tourism plays in the local economy and advocating for public education on the issue. “Cruise tourism contributes $250 to $300 million annually to the Cayman economy, directly employing thousands of Caymanians,” Solomon stated, countering claims of limited economic benefits.

The in-studio guests had argued for more comprehensive evaluations of cruise tourism, including a cost-benefit analysis, while highlighting passenger satisfaction with the current tendering system. They suggested that the “fun ride” offered by tenders could serve as a positive alternative to building a pier. Solomon, however, pointed to safety concerns, citing personal experience with a near-fatal accident involving a tender rope.

“We need to ensure passenger safety and improve the visitor experience,” Solomon asserted, adding that the pier represents a strategic investment in the Cayman Islands’ economic future.

With a referendum on cruise berthing scheduled to coincide with General Elections on April 30, 2025, ACT reaffirmed its mission to foster informed dialogue, stressing the importance of balancing environmental protection with economic growth. The association has announced plans for an educational campaign to provide accurate information and encourage constructive discussions on the issue.
