MORNE ROUGE, Martinique, Wednesday August 24, 2016 – An alleged terrorist who escaped house arrest in Martinique last month, is now back in custody.

Rachid Rafaa was recaptured on Sunday, near the bungalow in the northern town of Morne Rouge where he had been held under house arrest for two years, according to media outlets in the French overseas territory.

The 40-year-old Moroccan had escaped on July 27, but police say they got a tip that he had been going back to the house regularly to get food and that’s how they managed to capture him.

The St. Lucia Times reported that Rafaa appeared in court on Monday and was remanded to prison. He faces up to three years in jail for the escape.

The online newspaper added that an inquiry is now underway to determine whether he had any accomplices, and what he did during his 26-day run.

Rafaa has been accused by Moroccan authorities of being a member of al-Qaeda and using his computer skills to disseminate information on behalf of the terrorrist group.

He has denied any connection to the jihadist movement. Rafaa was arrested in France in 2009 and transferred to Martinique after the European Court of Human Rights agreed not to extradite him to Morocco for fear he may be tortured.

He had been under house arrest in Martinique since May 15, 2014.
