Alpha Kappa Alpha’s backyard farming project a major success
Members of the Eta Psi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority plant a key lime tree at the campus of the Willamae Pratt Centre for Girls. NASSAU, Bahamas — On May 18th 2013, in commemoration of the Eta Psi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated’s 50th anniversary and in celebration of Earth Day and Arbor Day a key lime tree was planted at the campus of the Willamae Pratt Centre for Girls.
This tree planting ceremony was further marked as an extension of the group’s backyard farming project under the The Global Poverty Initiative with members and residents of the centre participating.
The goals for this Global Poverty Initiative are to end hunger, preserve the environment and empower our young women.
The backyard farming project in particular provides food production skills and training in self-reliance through gifts of seeds, livestock and training in environmentally sound agriculture. The project also encourages these young women with maintaining sustainable food practices.
