Ascension President and CEO Talks Style, Strategy with Modern Healthcare

In a wide-ranging interview just before his 65th birthday, Ascension President and Chief Executive Officer Anthony R. Tersigni, EdD, FACHE, recently talked with the editor of Modern Healthcare. Topics included Ascension’s approach to collaboration, the development of clinically integrated systems of care, population health, Dr. Tersigni’s management style, succession planning, Health City Cayman Islands and more.

The concept of population health is rooted in Ascension’s mission of caring for the whole person: body, mind and spirit, Dr. Tersigni said. A key strategy to achieve that type of person-centered care, he said, is development of clinically integrated systems of care – local or regional networks to develop and improve communication, collaboration and sharing of data to support more seamless care for those Ascension serves.

Dr. Tersigni rejected the idea of a “growth strategy” for Ascension. Instead, he said Ascension is focused on increasing “covered lives” – that is, people who have entrusted management of their healthcare and health to Ascension – through mechanisms such as population health management. To support that goal, Ascension is interested in working with others in the field with similar values and who are aligned with Ascension’s strategic direction, which may include hospitals, skilled nursing centers, home health agencies, insurance companies or other parts of the care continuum.
