The attorney was one of several lawyers appearing before the Commission of Inquiry into the collapse of the insurance giant, CLICO and the Hindu Credit Union (HCU).

PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad, Wednesday August 28, 2013 – Trinidad and Tobago police were Wednesday continuing their search for the gunman who shot and killed attorney Dr Wesley Debideen in the car park of a mall on the outskirts of the capital late Tuesday.

Police described the murder of Debideen, 68, as a “clear hit” adding that he had been shot in the head and about the body several times as he drove his vehicle in the car park of Grand Bazaar.

Eyewitnesses said the lone assailant walked a few feet away from the vehicle, and returned to empty his gun on the attorney, who was one of several lawyers appearing before the Commission of Inquiry into the collapse of the insurance giant, CLICO and the Hindu Credit Union (HCU).

“I couldn’t see the man’s face clearly because of the cap, which was pulled down low but he wasn’t wearing a mask,” one witness told reporters, noting that the killer appeared unhurried.

Debideen, who held a doctorate in food chemistry, was also a former general manager of the Airports Authority. One television station reported he had been receiving death threats following his appearance in a case involving land.

In a statement, the ANSA McAL Group of Companies, owner of the Grand Bazaar, said all efforts will continue to be made to ensure the safety of customers and tenants of facility. (CMC)
