Bahamas High Commission hosts CARICOM 40th Anniversary reception in Ottawa, Ontario
OTTAWA, Canada – The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) celebrated 40 years of cooperation and strengthening of ties among member countries on Tuesday, June 11th at the prestigious Fairmont Chateau Laurier Hotel. High commissioners of member countries, dignitaries and various distinguished guests gathered to celebrate the milestone occasion.
This year’s reception was hosted by the Bahamas High Commission, which coincides with another 40th Anniversary milestone – The Bahamas’ Independence. His Excellency Dr. Calsey Johnson, High Commissioner to Canada for The Commonwealth of The Bahamas, served as Master of Ceremonies for the evening.
Some 400 guests were addressed by His Excellency Edward Greaves, High Commissioner to Canada for Barbados and current Dean of the CARICOM group of countries in Ottawa. He brought greetings on behalf of The Secretary General of CARICOM.
The Hon. Diane Ablonczy, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, was also on-hand and brought remarks on behalf of the Canadian government.
Guests were able to meet and mingle with various diplomats and dignitaries as they were treated to live music, exquisite food native to CARICOM member countries, in a festive environment.
High Commissioner Greaves in his remarks addressed the need for continued co-operation between CARICOM nations and Canada. He recalled in his remarks the continued growth of CARICOM and its importance in the region. High Commissioner Johnson spoke of the good relations between The Bahamas and Canada and he invited all in the room to visit The Bahamas, which he said is the most beautiful country in the world. He also invited persons to invest in The Bahamas as he said, “We are interested in direct foreign investment.”
