Baptist Health International physicians position with Miami Cancer Institute
Baptist Health International is pleased to announce that Dr. Leonard Kalman, Dr. Jeff Boyd and Dr. Michele Ryder will position with the Miami Cancer Institute.
MIAMI CANCER INSTITUTE NAMES LEONARD KALMAN, M.D. DEPUTY MEDICAL DIRECTOR AND CHIEF CLINICAL OFFICER
MIAMI, Fla. – January 14, 2016 – Leonard Kalman, M.D., joins the executive leadership of Miami Cancer Institute at Baptist Health South Florida as deputy medical director and chief clinical officer. Dr. Kalman plays a critical role in supporting the overall mission and vision of the Cancer Institute, and in defining its clinical components. He is involved in the recruitment of faculty and staff, and is working with the operational team to create a multidisciplinary model of care combined with an unsurpassed patient experience.
Following the completion of his medical oncology fellowship at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City in 1982, Dr. Kalman became a practicing community medical oncologist, and joined the staffs of Baptist Hospital and South Miami Hospital. As the practice grew under his leadership, he eventually served as the Chairman of the Board of Managers of what became Advanced Medical Specialties (AMS), a large diversified oncology practice in Miami-Dade and Monroe Counties. As chairman, he led AMS’ strategic planning, quality and growth initiatives. As of December 2014, the physicians and employees of AMS joined Baptist Health as the founding oncologists of Miami Cancer Institute.

In addition to his leadership role within Miami Cancer Institute, Dr. Kalman, committed to value-based cancer care, also serves on the Board of Managers of the Baptist Health Quality Network, a collaboration between Baptist Health and the finest doctors throughout the region. The Network is designed to improve access to quality healthcare throughout south Florida.
MIAMI, Fla. – January 14, 2016 – Jeff Boyd, Ph.D., a renowned expert in cancer research and genetic testing, joins the executive leadership of Miami Cancer Institute at Baptist Health South Florida as director of translational research and genomic medicine. In this capacity, Dr. Boyd will play a critical role in positioning Miami Cancer Institute’s Center for Genomic Medicine as an international leader for highly personalized genetic analyses tailored to patients’ individual needs.
Dr. Boyd was most recently senior vice president for Molecular Medicine, executive director of the Cancer Genome Institute and the Robert C. Young, M.D., Chair in Cancer Research at Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia, where he also maintained a research laboratory. Previously, he served as attending biologist and director of the Diagnostic Molecular Genetics Laboratory and the Gynecology and Breast Research Laboratory at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York.

He will foster important relationships with our academic alliance partner, as well as with other leaders in genomic medicine.”
Dr. Boyd is professor and chairman of the Department of Human and Molecular Genetics at Florida International University’s Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine. He serves on the editorial board of the American Journal of Pathology and has held faculty positions at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, the University of Pennsylvania and the National Institutes of Health.
A native of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, Dr. Boyd received his bachelor’s degree from Duke University, and his master’s and doctorate degree in toxicology/biochemistry from North Carolina State University in Raleigh.
MIAMI, Fla. – January 14, 2016 – Michele Ryder, R.N., has been named chief operating officer/chief nursing officer for Miami Cancer Institute at Baptist Health South Florida. In this role, Ms. Ryder provides leadership and support for the Cancer Institute’s business and nursing operations along the patient care continuum, including the Infusion suites, multidisciplinary clinics, radiation oncology and ancillary services.
Ms. Ryder’s extensive professional background encompasses over 37 years in both patient care and executive positions. She is a clinical expert in hospital operations and has been responsible for the growth of the renowned neuroscience and surgical programs at Baptist Hospital of Miami, where she began her career 29 years ago in surgery and the post-anesthesia care unit.
“As a well-respected leader with many years at Baptist Health, Ms. Ryder’s experience and commitment to excellence will help lead nursing and business operations for Miami Cancer Institute,” said Wayne Brackin, Baptist Health executive vice president and chief operating officer.
A member of the American College of Healthcare Executives and South Florida Organization of Healthcare Executives, Ms. Ryder also sits on the board of Living Hope Haiti. In this capacity, she has organized more than 24 Baptist Health surgical trips to the country, which provide life-changing surgery for Haitian residents in need.
Ms. Ryder holds two masters degrees in nursing and healthcare administration from the University of St. Francis.
