Barbados Independence Celebrations Cayman Islands “Man of the Year” Award winner visits Barbados
The award was announced at a dinner held on Friday, 28 November 2014, as part of the celebrations in Cayman to mark Barbados’ 48th anniversary of Independence. Mr. Barker was recognised for his community service, contribution to the arts, cultural activities, athletics and mentorship of other young people and his work with disabled students.
Mr. Barker’s award comprised an airline ticket to Barbados; four nights’ accommodation at South Gap Hotel; a rental car for five days, compliments Courtesy Rent-A-Car; a dive for two persons on the Atlantis Submarines; and a tour of the Barbados Concorde Experience for two persons, compliments of Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc.
He was welcomed by the outstanding St. Philip Parish Ambassador, Darren Watson, and Parish Attendant, Katrina Watson, who accompanied him on his many engagements around the island. These included sampling the nightlife, visiting attractions such as Harrison’s Cave and a sugar factory, being interviewed on local radio and television, and experiencing Bajan cuisine and Crop Over culture.
He says of his trip to Barbados, “My itinerary was jam packed from the first day to the last.” It also included meetings with Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, the Hon. Maxine McLean; Attorney General, the Hon. Adriel Brathwaite; and Minister of Transport and Works, the Hon. Michael Lashley.
Mr. Barker adds, “It was a terrific opportunity to interact with a different culture. I saw that there are many similarities between Barbados and the Cayman Islands, but still subtle differences. So, it was refreshing to experience that and to adapt to the new surroundings. Being able to establish a relationship with the St. Philip Parish Ambassadors is invaluable, as I know I have formed long-term friendships.”
Mr. Barker was in Barbados from August 16 to 20. He has since returned to his Law studies at Carleton University, Canada.
Honorary Consul, Ms. Juliette Gooding, expressed appreciation to the Ministers of Government of Barbados who accommodated Mr. Barker at short notice, and thanks all who contributed to a successful and enjoyable visit for the Man of The Year.
