Boom lift tips over in George Town, Grand Cayman
At approximately 11.35hrs on Sunday (29) a 27 year old male was transported to George Town Hospital with head injuries. The male was operating an 80ft boom lift in the process of carrying out painting work on the CIBC-First Caribbean Bank in Main Street, George Town when it apparently flipped over, throwing the male to the ground and also damaging two CUC utility poles.
Emergency services and CUC attended the scene a short time later.
Roads were blocked from Dr Roys Drive/Shedden Road to Main Street whilst repair work is executed by CUC.
Some customers along Shedden Road, Dr. Roy’s Drive, the Citrus Grove Building, the Police Station and the Post Office were without power.
The lift was rented from local rental company A-1.
Website www.vertikal.net reports:
The man was using the lift, a Genie S-80, to mask off the windows of the First Caribbean Bank in the town centre, prior to painting the building. It looks as though this is an older S-80 that incorporates extending axles, which were not extended in this case.
The boom was fully raised with just one man in the platform, making it somewhat back heavy and with the axles retracted it would not have taken a great deal to cause it to overturn. It also looks as though it might have been driven off the kerb of the pavement/sidewalk?
The man stayed in the platform, possibly due to the wearing a harness? And as a result survived the overturn which took out a power line pole before landing on a restaurant building across the road. No one else was involved in the incident. The injured man was taken to hospital with head injuries but is expected to make a full recovery.
