Botany and Booze, Perfectly Distilled
Who knew that horticulture was such an intoxicating subject? In her follow-up to the New York Times bestsellers Wicked Bugs and Wicked Plants, Amy Stewart explores the odd, unusual and surprisingly common plants that have produced the world’s greatest spirits.
Gardeners and cocktail lovers are invited to join the award-winning author at Michael’s Genuine Food & Drink, Camana Bay on Saturday, April 13, from 6-7:30pm for a special happy hour event celebrating the release of her new book, The Drunken Botanist. Sample Amy’s signature concoctions while she shares tips on growing your own cocktail garden that will have you backyard bartending in no time. The Camana Bay landscaping team will also be on hand to share their expansive local knowledge. Then browse a selection of Amy’s books and have your purchases signed by the author herself.
This free event is part of the Books & Books International Visiting Author Series, generously sponsored by Camana Bay.
About the Book
Sake began with a grain of rice. Scotch emerged from barley, tequila from agave, rum from sugarcane, bourbon from corn. Thirsty yet? In The Drunken Botanist, Amy Stewart explores the dizzying array of herbs, flowers, trees, fruits and fungi that humans have, through ingenuity, inspiration and sheer desperation, contrived to transform into alcohol.
Of all the extraordinary and obscure plants that have been fermented and distilled, a few are dangerous, some are downright bizarre and one is as ancient as dinosaurs—but each represents a unique cultural contribution to our global drinking traditions and our history.
This fascinating concoction of biology, chemistry, history, etymology and mixology—with more than fifty drink recipes and growing tips for gardeners—will make you the most popular guest at any cocktail party.
Select titles by Amy Stewart are now available at Books & Books.
