Britain to ask extradition of ex-Caribbean leader
Further to our story on jailed former premier of Turks & Caicos Islands in Brazil, Michael Misick, Associated Press have reported Britain is preparing a formal extradition request to Brazil for him.
Michael Misick was detained early last month at an airport in Rio de Janeiro on an international warrant issued by Interpol.
British authorities in the Turks & Caicos Islands want to question Misick as they investigate criminal allegations of systemic corruption in the islands during his tenure.
The islands’ attorney general said Wednesday that the extradition request will be submitted this month.
Misick stepped down as premier in 2009, shortly after Britain took temporary control of the islands’ government. He has denied any wrongdoing but was a fugitive until his arrest last month.
He had sought political asylum in Brazil.
