Bus falls off cliff leaving 14 dead, 38 injured in Colombia
The Associated Press reported 14 people were killed and at least 38 injured when a bus slid off the road and fell into a ravine in the northern Colombia state of Antioquia, local police reported.
The incident occurred Sunday afternoon, the report said, and involved a local bus known as a “chiva.”
The report described a chiva bus as a vehicle painted in bright colors that carries passengers both inside and on top of the roof.
Local media reported coffee growers, peasants and a man who was traveling to visit relatives were among the passengers killed. Also killed, the report continued, were two young children.
Col. Juan Carlos Torres of Antioquia’s police department said the bus fell almost 1,000 feet (300 meters) down a cliff after the driver lost control, the report said. Nearby villagers also helped rescuers search for survivors, the report said.
