Butterfield supports competitors for 2013 Island Games in Bermuda

Young competitors taking part in the 2013 Island Games in Bermuda can now apply for financial assistance from Butterfield in Guernsey.

Local people in full or part-time education are eligible to apply for the bursaries which will be awarded to sportsmen or women who will be attending or part of a selection squad with a hope of attending the Games

There are two bursaries on offer and the successful candidates will be awarded significant financial support towards the cost of travel and accommodation at the games.

John Robinson, Managing Director of Butterfield in Guernsey says the bank is excited about helping local young athletes compete at this level and experience the Island Games.

“Butterfield strives to provide a first class service by being disciplined and proactive so we identify with athletes who have shown the same commitment to their sport.

“The Bank of N.T. Butterfield was established in Bermuda in 1858 and our head office is based there showing our strong connection with the host Island. Our offices in Bermuda and the Cayman Islands will also be supporting their teams locally. Understanding that the cost of travel to the competition is high we wanted to help support some of the athletes attend the Games,” he said.

Chairman of the Guernsey Island Games Association, David Inglis, supports the initiative.

“Several students have already expressed their interest in this scheme so it is definitely going to make a difference. Guernsey is fielding one of the largest teams this year and we want it to be as strong as possible.

“The teams have all been working really hard on their fundraising to ensure they get to the games so this has the potential to help more than just the two people who are selected,” he said.

Students have until 17 September to send their application to Butterfield after which the entries will be reviewed and a shortlist selected for interview.

Application forms are available from David Inglis and have been distributed to sports coaches preparing for the games.
