WASHINGTON—The College of American Pathologists (CAP) President Emily E. Volk, MD, FCAP issued the following statement regarding the US Supreme Court’s ruling on Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health:

“The CAP stands with the physician community as it defends the practice of medicine and protects the sanctity of the patient-physician relationship. While it is necessary for laws and regulations to provide proper oversight in our health care system, any statute criminalizing evidence-based medical care provided by physicians represents a harsh and unwarranted intrusion by state governments. The CAP will monitor for any impact these laws may have on our members.

“The CAP further shares concern with how the outcome of the ruling will intensify health care inequity. These additional burdens come at a time when the CAP and other physician groups are working to improve access to comprehensive health care for all Americans, especially those currently and historically underserved.”

As the world’s largest organization of board-certified pathologists and leading provider of laboratory accreditation and proficiency testing programs, the College of American Pathologists (CAP) serves patients, pathologists, and the public by fostering and advocating excellence in the practice of pathology and laboratory medicine worldwide. As a 501(c)(6) membership organization, the CAP is the only entity representing pathologists with unrestricted advocacy capability and a political action committee, PathPAC.
