Caribbean Transitional Energy Conference to focus on Cayman’s Clean Energy Future

For those interested in the Cayman Islands’ clean energy future, the Caribbean Transitional Energy Conference (CTEC 2020) is set to take place virtually this Thursday (19th November 2020), and boasts over 20 speakers from all over the world including the USA, the UK, Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica, Hawaii and Bermuda. From the Cayman Islands, CTEC welcomes His Excellency the Governor, Martyn Roper O.B.E. and the Honorable Joseph Hew, Minister of Commerce, Planning and Infrastructure.

For businesses and individuals interested in how clean energy can boost the economy of the Cayman Islands and create economic sustainability post-COVID, there will be a number of presentations and panel discussions on this topic. The first is a presentation on distributed generation by Christopher Burgess, Director of Projects for the Islands Energy Program at the Rocky Mountain Institute – Carbon War Room in America, followed by a panel discussion with Bruce Levy, President and Chief Executive Officer of BMR in North America, James Whittaker, President of the Cayman Renewable Energy Association and Jeane Nikolai, Director of Energy Bermuda.

The second, which aims to create change and innovation in this topic, is a panel discussion on building a green economy in a post-COVID world.

Moderated by David Gumbs from the Rocky Mountain Institute – Carbon War Room in America, it features panelists including Gina Ebanks-Petrie, Director of Cayman Islands Department of Environment, Andre Ebanks, Representative of Cayman Islands Government Office UK & Europe and Wil Pineau, CEO of the Cayman Islands Chamber of Commerce amongst others.

Finally, a special DART-sponsored presentation and discussion is taking place in the afternoon, on building a clean and sustainable Cayman in a post-COVID world, with guest speaker James Ellsmoor from UK-based Island Innovations. This is followed by a discussion moderated by senior environmental journalist Daphne Ewing-Chow.

The agenda for CTEC 2020 also has a strong focus on the role of the regulator in driving forward change in the energy sector. One of the not-to-be-missed segments is the regional showcase, which this year is focused on driving clean energy growth; success stories from the policy regulatory markets around the region. Moderated by Racquel Moses, CEO of the Caribbean Climate-Smart Accelerator in Trinidad and Tobago, prominent worldwide panelists include Allison Jean, CEO of the National Utilities Regulatory Commission in St. Lucia, Fitzroy Vidal, Principal Director for Energy in the Ministry of Science, Energy and Technology in Jamaica, Lorraine Akiba, CEO of LHA Ventures in Hawaii and Malike Cummings, CEO of OfReg in the Cayman Islands.

Mr. James Whittaker, President of the Cayman Renewable Energy Association (CREA) and organiser of CTEC 2020, said, “With only days to go until CTEC 2020 we can’t wait to take to the stage. CTEC 2020, organised by the Cayman Renewable Energy Association (CREA), will bring the best of local, regional and international clean energy experience and expertise to the Cayman Islands. CTEC affords its attendees in depth insight into the Cayman energy roadmap and unique access to public and private sector leaders. The event will take place virtually on 19th November 2020, opening up the event to a worldwide audience.
