Congratulations to Carrie McCoy and Le’Bron McLean who are the recipients of The Thomson Leadership and Innovation Award scholarships for 2020.

Twenty-two-year-old Carrie McCoy from George Town is pursuing a Master’s of Science degree in Physician Associate Studies from the University of Brighton in the United Kingdom. Ms. McCoy is a graduate of St. Ignatius Catholic High School and completed a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Human Biology with a minor in Mathematics from Keele University in Newcastle, United Kingdom in 2016.

Upon completion of her studies, Ms. McCoy plans to pursue a career in healthcare. When studying for her Bachelor’s degree, she gained valuable work experience at the Health Services Authority (HSA) in the dialysis, paediatrics and maternity wards and was enrolled in the Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) programme at Health City Cayman Islands.

Seventeen-year-old Le’Bron McLean from West Bay is pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts in Kingston, Jamaica. Mr. McLean completed his A levels at Cayman Prep & High School in 2020.

Mr. McLean aspires to pursue a career in dance. He has been actively involved in the local dance scene for a number of years as a volunteer teacher and choreographer with the UCCI Dancers and the Cayman Islands National Dance Company and has represented the Cayman Islands at regional arts festivals such as the Jamaica Dance Umbrella and Caribbean Festival of Arts (CARIFESTA).

Started in 2019, The Thomson Leadership and Innovation Award is a scholarship designed to recruit and support Caymanian students who are driven to improve the Cayman Islands in areas including, but not limited to, entrepreneurial studies, emerging technologies, design and creative arts and/or the sciences. The Award is funded by the Peter N. Thomson Foundation and is administered in association with Caribbean Utilities Company, Ltd. (CUC).
