The 2023 Electoral Boundary Commission recently met with representatives from the Economics and Statistics Office (ESO) and the Lands and Survey Department as part of ongoing efforts to ensure fair representation and equitable distribution of electoral districts in the Cayman Islands. 

During the series of meetings, which took place April 18 to 21, the teams reviewed the 2021 Census data and the Labour Force Survey population estimates. The Commissioners also considered other relevant matters at the meetings and visited each of the Electoral Districts to determine whether any changes are needed to the current boundaries.

In addition to a detailed review of the current electoral districts, specifically those in Grand Cayman, there was a comparison of the number of eligible Caymanians and registered electors in each electoral district.

Reflecting on the meetings, Commission chairperson Dr Lisa Handley shared, “We are committed to ensuring that the electoral districts in the Cayman Islands are fair, balanced, and reflect the needs and aspirations of the people. These meetings with ESO and Lands and Survey were extremely helpful in reviewing population data and development trends”.

The Electoral Boundary Commission will meet again this month and intends to hold both public consultation events and meetings with Members of Parliament. There are also plans to travel to the Sister Islands to undertake similar review activities.
