Cayman: Appointment of Grand Court Judge – Financial Services Division
His Excellency the Governor, Martyn Roper, OBE is pleased to announce the appointment of Deemster David Doyle as a full-time Judge of the Grand Court to serve in the Financial Services Division.
The Judicial and Legal Services Commission recently carried out an open recruitment process advertising the post both locally and overseas. Following a short-listing process, an interview panel interviewed three persons for this post ultimately recommending Deemster Doyle as the successful candidate. His Excellency subsequently accepted the recommendation.
“The Financial Services Division is an integral part of our Grand Court providing an extremely high level of expertise in the complex litigation that arises out of the Cayman Islands’ world class standing in the financial industry” His Excellency the Governor Martyn Roper, OBE said. “I am delighted to appoint someone of Deemster Doyle’s calibre to the post of Grand Court Judge to serve in the Financial Services Division and look forward to welcoming him to the Cayman Islands this summer” His Excellency continued.
“Deemster Doyle has a real commitment, passion, and desire to contribute to the development of the law and the administration of justice, specifically in the area of financial services” the Honourable Chief Justice said. “His extensive understanding of relevant local, regional, and international legislation coupled with his wide-ranging experiences hearing financial services matters in the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands will enhance the ability of the Grand Court to continue advance the administration of justice in the
financial services sector. I am very pleased to be welcoming him as a colleague and member of our judiciary. ” the Chief Justice continued.
It is expected that Deemster Doyle will take up his new appointment in summer 2021.
Note: Deemster Doyle, CBE
Deemster Doyle, CBE is a 60 year old British national who, for the past two years, has worked as an Advocate with Cains Advocates in the Isle of Man. Prior to this post Deemster Doyle sat as a Judge of Appeal for Jersey and Guernsey (from 2015-2018) exercising appellate jurisdiction including dealing with appeals related to trusts, financial regulation, financial crime, and professional negligence. Deemster Doyle served as First Deemster and Clerk of the Rolls in Isle of Man from 2010-2018 where he focused on financial sector work. In addition he served as Second Deemster in Isle of Man from 2003- 2010 where he focused mainly on serious crime and civil cases. Prior to being appointed to the bench Deemster Doyle worked as an Advocate for nearly twenty years in the areas of company, commercial, trust, and regulatory matters for Dickinson Cruickshank & Co. Deemster Doyle was awarded a CBE in the Queen’s 2019 New Year’s Honours for services to the law and the administration of justice. David Doyle was called to the Bar in 1982 becoming a Bencher of Gray’s Inn in 2011. He regularly analyses and researches legal issues, delivers lectures, and participates in continued professional development.
